    Several countries have decided to rename things up to and including the spelling of their own name, no other entity on the planet is required to acknowledge the change.

    If the head of some government wants to rename a body of water, nothing is stopping them from declaring the name change, whether there's a law in-country saying they can or not is irrelevant. Nothing is making anyone else use the changed name, either.

    Ok but forcing US government agencies to call something the wrong name is just pathetic and accomplishes nothing. And most notably, it doesn't actually change the name of the thing.

    Well, it does change the name in a substantial amount of circumstances relevant to us citizens. I don't disagree with you otherwise. It's entirely pathetic and acutely stupid.
