I never claimed either part of that. What I said was that I'm applying the same standard to both, and I even said that I don't agree with Russia's actions. It's you who wants to assign "good guy" and "bad guy" labels here.

No, they have not. A faction of Ukrainians, who happened to be men with assault rifles, overthrew the central government and declared themselves to represent the will of the people. Then a different faction of Ukrainians, who also happened to be men with assault rifles, overthrew some regional governments and claimed to represent the will of the people. And you are arbitrarily declaring that this group of armed men actually does represent the people and that one doesn't.

After the overthrow of the government, elections were held, which had some potential to legitimize the new government. But then that new government went and outlawed major opposition parties.

Which part of that represents "Ukrainians making a choice?" The men with assault rifles, or the elections where the opposition was banned?

Second, Russia engaging in deceitful and violent measures to derail that goal lessens their claims further, it literally makes them the bad guy here.
