I wouldn't recommend going framework at all honestly. All usb functionality stopped working on mine for no reason and after a lengthy chat with customer support they just told me to buy a new mainboard. I was outside of warranty but the issue seemed like a hardware failure at no fault of my own and the warranty window is pretty short.

    So your complaint is that your warranty expired and they had parts you could buy to repair it?

    It's nice that it can be repaired and I really respect what the company is trying to do which is why I bought one in the first place. My complaint is just that it experienced random hardware failure that renders it unusable just outside of warranty and the only option that was offered is buying an expensive new mainboard.

    It was out of warranty. That's how warranties work.

    It sucks that it died earlier than expected, but they can't stay solvent just letting people get replacement parts outside of warranty for free.

    A Thinkpad offers 3 years warranty on parts and you can pay for up to 3 more, that's 6 years they warrant their motherboard won't blow or melt any fuses and if it does you can ship the laptop and they'll fix it

    Yeah but you agree to those warranty terms at purchase. The commenter earlier was bitching about how Framework wouldn't warranty something OUT of warranty. They bought a device with a warranty period, it died outside that warranty period, and now Framework shouldn't be expected to fix it for free.

    Thanks - that's helpful. What's your go-to for a linux laptop that has the build quality of Apple?

    I don't really have a recommendation at the moment, currently using a lenovo 2 in 1 and I've had a good experience with running Linux on it. The build quality is also quite good, such as being a full metal shell.

    I'm using a surface laptop studio with the linux-surface kernel (NixOS, btw :p).

    It's actually quite repairable compared to some other offerings and are generally available used on ebay. I won a $610 bid for mine with an i7, 32gb RAM and a 3050ti. I think all the models have the same 120hz 3:2 screen too. I'm incredibly pleased with it.
