uhhh honestly i've only played Unbound and Elite Redux, but my understanding of mariomon is it's a full map/story/mon conversion where you're mario and you capture mons that are just mario level enemies, with the story goal being to get all 8 'power stars' (badges) from battles across the mushroom kingdom before bowser does.
