Locally we have been setting up some mesh systems. Its been fun work. One of the best things about it is:

  1. All traffic is human.
  2. No survalance

Its in the early phases but its been a sucess so far.

    Mesh networks, you say? I've gotta get in on the ground floor of this new advertising opportunity so I can rake in that sweet early adopter cassssh!

    We got tired of meshtastic so we build some with Wi-Fi HaLow and other Wifi stuff.

    Meshtastic/core are ok as a hobby, but after doing it for a good number of years, im just tired of the downtime, strange issues with heltek and the very small amount you can actually send.

    Its fun and we have got a number of houses set up. Its not too hard in our area.

    The sad irony of efforts like that and stuff like Lemmy or Mastadon is that they HAVE to stay just a little too fiddly, too inaccessible, too rough. Otherwise, they become a victim of their own success. Suddenly, "normal" people show up and ruin everything. Scammers follow, bots follow, advertisers follow, etc. It's like with piracy, where any page that's known to "normal" people is very likely going to be taken down.
