Please be patient with me, I have an extremely hard time with self expression
I am not good at like, observing a thing and putting my interpretation onto paper. I try a lot, but it never meets my (probably impossible) standards. This really started to frustrate me recently, so instead I started just drawing interesting shapes and filling them with patterns. The image attached to this post is an example of one.
But now I have these little sketches that look cool to me but feel unfinished. I don't know how to develop them any further. If I try, I feel like I ruin them.
And then it dawned on me: I don't have a fucking clue what I'm doing. I've been trying out art as a fun hobby for the past 2 years. I read a couple of textbooks and took notes, I've filled a few sketchbooks, painted a little, and had a great time. But I can tell I'm still shit and I want to be good. How do I do that? I guess I have a few main questions:
-What should I spend my extremely limited practice time on?
-How can I incorporate the things I like about others' art into my own? Do I just straight up try to copy them?
-Some people I've asked irl have said it's just a matter of time. I haven't been creating long enough to be good yet. Is there any truth to this? Am I just impatient?
Here's some more of those weird sketches if you're interested. I can also post some more uh... grounded? art for comparison?
spoiler

Try making copies of ones you like and coloring them. Even just a little. Try some watercolor, or whatever is on hand.
Get a pack of cheap frames and try framing a few. Putting a frame on something can like really punch up how something appears. Sometimes a frame is all that's needed to feel "finished."
If you wanna get "better," study anatomy, draw bones, muscles. Draw bodies. Draw portraits. Look at art and watch some videos. Work bigger.
Personally, idrc if something looks funky or off. I kinda prefer a funky portrait or abstract done with love and concentration and time, over some shitty ai glowing full color rendering. My fav kind of art is like "outsider art" where the person was just making shit all the time, expressing themselves, technical stuff doesn't matter, they did it out of love or habit.
Personally, I really like your drawings! I'd love to have one framed. If you never studied anatomy or whatever, and kept doodling, sketching, working stuff out, that would be very cool and admirable. Most people don't have time or energy for what it takes to be a "real" artist. Shit is so fucking gatekept its insane. Just make stuff cuz it feels good and you're left with something you can look back on. Your art is 1000% valid, and you don't need approval from some bourgeois art critic or buyer.
Thank you for your suggestions and perspective. And the compliment! No one has said they wanted something I made framed before!!
I can promise you even if I get "better" I will never stop making stuff like this. These types drawings have become a kind of catharsis for me I guess. I just want to sharpen my skills because the brain -> paper transition is never quite how I want it to be.
I think its probably just gonna take practice, connecting the brain to the arm and hand to the paper. Like, creating those pathways in the nervous system, it is a very practical and physical process. Its almost like, you aren't practicing to "get better" making stuff is practice. You'll move through a period of deliberate decision making to just having those connections set up and flowing.
Thanks so much for sharing!
