What the fuck their age is their age regardless of the age of consent. 16 year olds in Japan dont magically turn into 18 year olds to the rest of the world. I don't think that's at all equivalent

As in, in Japan, pointing out a character is sixteen is the same as pointing out a character is 18 in America.

Legally, maybe. Socially, no. Traditionally in Japan "adulthood" is at 20 years. It's a whole thing. They lowered it to 18 a few years ago (it's been messy).
