They just watched the last episode of Lost

As someone who watched Lost when it originally aired:

oh no

I watched the whole thing when it aired too, and the last episode was the biggest table flip moment... it was like the writers had no clue where to go, and someone said "ok sorry but we need a script that ties off all loose ends. You have 10 minutes to come up with something."

As someone who's never seen the last episode of Lost. What happened in the last episode of Lost?

[-] pmjv@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 week ago

they were all dead the whole time

[-] pieguy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 week ago

...in the flash-sideways, which in retrospect was probably more stupid than if they were dead from the beginning on-island...

[-] pmjv@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 week ago

wait, really? i was pretty sure the island was meant to be purgatory.

[-] pieguy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 week ago

That's where things get fun (read: convoluted), because the island is purgatory, just not for the crash survivors (who are still alive at time of crash), but rather for souls not yet ready to move on (awaiting forgiveness from those they've wronged or something? Wasn't really explained)

That show is pretty dumb today, but it was epic when it came out.

One of the last true tv shows before the advent of streaming services.

You're welcome!

Lost was a victim of the "mystery box" style of writing, in which the writers when conceptualizing a long-term mystery only considered it's introduction and left the resolution for later. This lead to some mysteries never gaining a resolution, some gaining a completely asinine resolution, and even some that previously were given a satisfactory resolution being retconned for an asinine resolution (ex. the whispers were at first the others being weird, later retconned into being the dead people in purgatory on the island). Add to that, the characters became unrecognizable and stupid in the final season. All that made for an incredible downfall for a once awesome show.
