Kinda bad comparison.
Beijing was always* beijing. Peking was just a european fever dream.
On the other hand
Constantinople was the offical name and got later renamed Istanbul.
Yeah, i guess it's just one of those weird Euro things. Just like measuring things in deci/centilitres. When I lived in the UK everyone called it Beijing and measured everything in ml.
The university is still named that way
in finnish it's still "peking"
Same in Czech
