I would have to do the math, but I would be shocked if a cowling actually caught a blade failure. There is a lot of energy involved and the cowlings are thin to keep them light.

    Haven't they been adding a kevlar liner to the inner section of the cowling for a while now for that exact purpose? There was a pretty crazy incident a couple of years back where the liner came loose and got trapped in the intake blades. I was under the impression that most non regional jets were set up like that.
