I thought the horrific state of affairs on the ground would translate to something bigger. I have a huge blind spot for India. Why is it like this? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] commiewolf@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 months ago I'm not an expert but I've tried to educate myself on the region, and the best I can explain it is that it's a society that was subjugated under colonialism for so long that it has inherited it's characteristics, and the state that resulted is one that is intended to fulfill the same colonial subject role in modern global capitalism. For this to work, the entire country, or at least the overwhelming majority have to be anti communist and pro imperialist, and the reactionary society, religious conservatism and outright hatred of their neighbours and minorities is so rooted in the people that even the so called communist parties have inherited this, and are all social chauvinist by now. The only reason they aren't up there with Israel and the US in terms of imperial and colonial behaviour is because they are not as capable militarily and economically to realise their fascist ambitions. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Malkhodr@lemmygrad.ml 1 point 2 months ago (2 children) Didn't Kerala eliminate extreme poverty through learning from China's poverty eradication campaign? I'm not gonna claim they're revolutionaries but compared to here in the states, where most communist orgs can't even organize a local county wide strike, it seems farther ahead. Although I guess that might just be a skewed perspective. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] commiewolf@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 months ago (1 child) This is apparently a widely propogated claim, but a big reason for why this happened was due to the state of Kerala having one of the biggest and wealthiest diaspora communities who send back enormous amounts of remittance money which to this day keeps the entire state's economy afloat and allows the local government and local communities to afford various social programs. The entire model collapses if money from diaspora in the West and the Arabian gulf states stops flowing in to prop it up. It's also historically had a head start compared to the rest of the country even since before independence since it was not a directly governed colony but a client princely state of the British Empire. Claiming that Indian socialism is responsible for their low poverty is also a little disingenuous because the neoliberal party has been in charge in many spells (nearly half of the time I think, including recently) throughout the state's history, so not really indicative of an enormous socialist tradition. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] Malkhodr@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 months ago Ah, thank you for the context on the claim. permalink fedilink source parent
