Attend a few conventions, acquire a series of free thumb drives, and turn them into a storage array
You're not the first person I've heard say to make a raid array of USB drives. Is that even logistically realistic? I mean, it sounds like a lot of effort that would ultimately end up with maybe half a terabyte of usable space. A single series could fill that.
Doable but honestly a pretty awful idea. Remember that they share a data bus, and have a low write endurance. About all its good for (aside from toying around with a silly sort of fun idea) is as a high speed spot for temporary data.
I set one up as a concept for temp storage of images being generated using a gaming engine that were being split and shoved out into multiple video streams. It worked, but there was no chance I'd rely on it (I even had a few of them die during the course of my goofing around).
Also you've got bus limits to deal with, so there is a limit to just how useful it can be in the first place. And for longer term storage, you've got a lot of risk for finicky behavior. So yeah, just not worth it, but technically doable.
It's not practical, but nothing is stopping you. I made a raid array of 1 internal SATA HDD + 1 external USB HDD of the same size once because I needed to store some data real quick before updating my NAS.
Also, with modern encoders you can fit a series on waaaaay less than half a terabyte. For example you can get the 14-episode 1st season of The Ramparts of Ice for 2.2GB. Obviously there are longer seasons than that, but we're talking about less than 200MB per episode and with really good quality too!
With 24 usb dongles that each take 4 keys (or a dongle) and you're ready to go!
