A little lazy but I took the wiki map of the long march and an exaggerated topographical map and spliced them together.

I didn't really have a reason for doing this, I just like exaggerated topographic maps and was curious about the route.

If you can get your hands on an ArcGIS Pro license (they're ~$100/yr), this guy has tons of really cool explorations of ways to visualize stuff using it.

You can kinda do the same in QGIS, but in my experience Arc is better for the symbologizing and visualization part. QGIS is much faster and more flexible when it comes to just consuming and modifying GIS data though.
