lol, Natalie's wiki is hilarious.
she went to and graduated from two bible colleges and her father was a "professor" at a third bible college.
two of those three bible colleges were in urban southern california. a lot of chatter about evangelical christian nationalists plays up their assumed rural context, but as someone who has seen many flavors of american white christian nationalism up close, the urban southern california variant is some truly off-the-rails shit.
when we're all being herded onto cattle cars, these people are going to be the ones explaining why it's god's plan, plastic faces plastered on every billboard, mural and screen with flags and crosses behind them.
The Nixon/Reagan/JohnWayne variety of conservatism is one of the strongest
i had to go to this equipment rental place in the middle-of-nowhere-turn-left and the guy running this franchise (not well) had his entire office/dining room absolutely coated with john wayne patriotic bullshit, bric-a-brac and tchotchkies. like super intense.
i wanted to tell him john wayne was a mean drunk and coward that dodged the war against fascists by hiding in movie lots in burbank, only playing soldier and a hardcase for cameras while naming names to black list coworkers and being gung-ho for vietnam. and that the only "enemy" he ever charged was a native american woman half his size.
As someone who grew up in this culture, this analysis is spot on. You get just the right mix of nationalism-when-convenient, but not-when-inconvenient, and racism-when-convenient, but not-when-inconvinent. Elitism for not being a "southern idiot", but also idealizes the southern lifestyle. Combine all that, with good marketing and whitewashing techniques stolen from Hollywood, and massive amounts of money. Stir it altogether, and watch the crazy-unhinged come out in fantastical new ways.
