I don't get "Left Coms". Wasn't Trotskyist a catch all term for Marxists left of Stalin? The POUM in the Spanish civil war was considered trotskyist even tho Trotsky himself condemned them. Even in the closer sense, "hate" doesn't fit. Also, Left Coms are the Marxists closest to anarchism. If it was "Stalinist" instead of "Left Coms", the meme would be funny.

Trotskyism is still a Marxist-Leninist ideology, and defends the formation of a vanguard party to lead the revolution. In that specific aspect it is not different from, say, Stalinism or Maoism.

While Left-Communism either rejects Leninism (but follows Marxism) or claim the current ML ideologies promote yet another bureaucratic rule, instead of proletarian rule. And it's extremely suspicious of any sort of "headed" organisation; as exemplified by Rühle's The Revolution Is Not A Party Affair.

Personal comment, as a Trotskyist: it's mostly a difference in the structure being proposed. That does matter but the goal is still the same, so I certainly don't hate them. It's just they (and the Anarchists!) are worried the structures I find useful might bite us back, and it did happen once, so their worries aren't unfounded.

fwiw in my life experience, Trotskyists tend to be more pragmatic about integrating ideas from the full spectrum of leftism. i also have to acknowledge that Trotsky has been instrumental to the revolutionary movements of the global south. where i have to critique Trotskyists is the ones i have known have a tendency to dismiss credible accusations of authoritarian comrades being fascists and will say stuff like "we need to break the status quo first, we'll deal with that after the revolution" then after the uprising the authoritarian faction purges the Trots and says they were secret fascist counter revolutionaries all along.

it's a thing where like… i'm reminded of Trotsky himself. he thought Lenin was a blowhard asshole and he sided with the mensheviks until the Bolsheviks got moving. then he joined the Bolsheviks, believing the best strategy was to get on board with the revolution even if the revolution wasn't perfect. then when Stalin seized power despite Lenin wanting to keep him away from power, Trotsky was out. i guess what i'm getting at is i have a great deal for Trotskyists even i think they miss the mark in some critical aspects. what i find most funny though is the extent to which MLs will go to say Trotsky got what he deserved and Trotskyists are fake leftists and still have the Trotskyists prefer to ally themselves with MLs than other 3rd camp leftists like anarchists

I'm probably the worst person to talk about this, given Bakunin influenced my political view by a lot, but I think even this tendency can be explained by the role of the vanguard. Something like this:

  • Trotskyists — you need someone to lead people
  • Stalinists, Dengists, Maoists, etc. — yup, you need someone to lead people
  • Anarchists — nope, don't bring this shit here, it'll become a new tool for oppression

I'm oversimplifying it, I know. [And to be frank it has been a long time since I read either theory or history regarding communism.] But note how this creates a situation where Trotskyists end siding with other Marxist-Leninists, but always trying to "pull" that vanguard to a different direction than the rest, creating internal disputes in that vanguard and claims we're trying to fuck everything up.

interesting! i guess that makes a lot of sense why Trotskyists would gravitate to more authoritarian models than their own rather than coalition building with less authoritarian models. i trend towards focusing more on what groups are doing and how they're helping and worrying less about who's in charge (and have even observed that groups survive longer if there's no one person in charge). thank you for the perspective on group dynamics!

Which puts them right between trotskyists and anarchists. Maybe I understand the meme wrong and the whole point is that even similar tendencies hate each other

[-] lvxferre@mander.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

I think your first interpretation was more accurate. Otherwise Maoism wouldn't make sense, it isn't similar to social democrats or to Trotskyism.

What leftcom refers to are either the Dutch/German council communist tendency that is largely dead, or the Italian tendency that generally follow Marx/Engels/Lenin theories and are often associated with figures like Bordiga/Damen, though they do have their differences, namely on the national question which was the burning question in first half of 20th century. It's insanely broad but also unique from other communist tendencies.

the Dutch/German council communist tendency

Sounds even closer to anarchism. Isn't that where anarchists and Marxists worked together? As in the council republic of Munich where anarchists like Erich Mühsam was active.

Not really, it's essentially just another way to organize DOTP so it's still opposed to Anarchism. Pannenkoek was a heavy critic of Anarchism, calling them radical liberals in one of his texts on the matter.

As for the event you reference, I honestly dont know anything about it so can't comment on it

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of "ML" (read: Dengist) influence. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, discussion and agitprop/stuff that's better fit for a poster than a meme go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme. Please post agitprop here)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Try to use alt text or image descriptions to allow for greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We encourage alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" (read: Dengists) (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.
