In a joint statement issued on 23 June, the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran formally agreed to establish a joint committee to manage the Strait of Hormuz and reaffirmed their roles as the primary guardians of the waterway.

Following high-level talks in Muscat between Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and an Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the two countries agreed to establish a joint committee to oversee shipping management, specifically regarding maritime services and costs, while consulting with other coastal and regional partners to ensure comprehensive coordination.

“The Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the two coastal states bordering the Strait of Hormuz, reaffirm their steadfast commitment to ensuring safe passage through the strait in full conformity with the relevant provisions of international law, while underscoring their sovereignty and sovereign rights over their respective territorial waters in the strait,” the joint statement read.

“The Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran affirm that all arrangements pertaining to the Strait of Hormuz must fully respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two Strait states,” the statement went on to say.
