Yeah that was what I always thought too. DS3 was my first and I was really into it shortly after all the DLC were released when it was at its peak of popularity, so I was into the community when it was super active. I probably heard someone mention the first meaning I thought it was. Or maybe I thought of it on my own and had it confirmed by someone else, I can’t remember now. That was close to a decade ago now, jeez. Can’t believe that.

Bloodborne was my first Soulsborne, but I couldn't get into it, at first. DS3 was my first darksouls game. Its still so friggin good. Other than the lacking a jump, I still prefer it to Elden Ring. But being a late-phase Souls gamer, I find DS1 too clunky to play, and ive never tried ds2

After DS3 I didn’t continue the series, until ER came out and I played the hell out of that and its DLC. If you include the DLC, ER is probably my all-time favourite game. Anyway, after playing ER (but before its DLC was released), I figured I’d go through the rest of the series. DS1 was a ton of fun, I really enjoyed it, but the endgame was a bit rough. I still enjoy replaying it up to (and including) O&S and then call it quits there, unless I wanna do the DLC which is excellent. Then I played Sekiro which, if we don’t include DLCs, is my favourite of the series.

I tried to get into BB, DeS, and DS2, but none of them held me long enough to get through them.
