How did excessive foot traffic harm the soil around it? It's been fenced off for over 50 years. Did they not fence it off enough? It should not have been allowed to be affected by tourism. Drought, pollution...etc I understand but tourism?

The theory I read is the soil became more and more compacted resulting in less rainwater making it down to the roots. With climate change also reducing the average rainfall in the area, there was much less moisture available below ground.
