The lesson here is never ever bother with shoplifters. If somebody is stealing from the store you work at, let them. No company deserves your loyalty.

    Shops make their budgeting decisions with an expectation of a certain amount of loss. Theft, spoilage, and damage are all estimated and included in the calculus. There's no reason to risk your own safety or well-being for a loss they're already expecting anyway.
