See if you can install the smarttube APK. Worlds different, can block shorts, auto blocks ads, built in auto update. I won't watch YouTube without some sort of a blocker, I used reavanced on my phone and tablets.

Unfortunately, the TV’s a Roku. I haven’t got the money to get a different one. Are there any ad-block options that would work for that?

If you can install apps via USB, smarttube should work. Will need to research your model

Don't need a new TV either, get a device like a Chromecast or Nvidia shield, they allow apk installation.
