It was also a mess as there was a lot of confusion around "64-bit" and "32-bit" systems that even most retailers weren't sure how to describe. Dude it was entertaining talking to best buy his who weren't even sure how to explain it all and the compatibility issues.
I didn't like Vista myself, but 8 seemed to be modernized enough and get away from Aero icons and glassy things.
