absolutist view
That's a better word, fair enough.
“center” here is still supporting that Stalin did tremendous good for the world and that countless accusations made against him are ludicrously false and many others are overblown.
By "center" i understand not even what Mao said about 70%/30%, but the more or less conscious adopting liberal premises for critique of Stalin. You most likely did read Losurdo book about Black Legend, it's very good especially the point on antisemitism. But on several moments i noticed Losurdo just accept liberal premise of Stalin bad uncritically. Furr is not doing that, he questions even the basics. And way more often than not he proves not even that Stalin good, but that the propaganda on which this is based is false.
What's really making him invaluable. He does aim and kick the old cornerstones of antisoviet propaganda that rest of the world take for granted and often either completely destroys them or at least show how overblown they were. My two favourite examples are Katyń and Beria. Both went unquestioned even among the communists. hell as a Pole living in Poland i never even heard anything about anyone even doubting official version of Katyń (not to mention that official version was basically a nazi one), it's absolute dogma here. Beria ia also the one reflexively adopted from Khrushchev and Sebag Pedofiore. Both narrations have absolutely glaring holes even on a first glance, but turned out somebody needed to take that glance.
