Time to make our own Olympic shirts.

Owens salutes the American flag after winning the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics. (L–R) Naoto Tajima, Owens, Luz Long.

Here’s another shirt design I’d wear.

All three were heroes.

What’s often missed is that Peter Norman, the white guy on podium, encouraged Carlos and Smith to take a stand, and he was the one who had the idea to wear a glove each, since they only had one pair.

Norman’s role in the protest led to him never being selected to represent Australia again, even though he was at the peak of a brilliant career in running. He qualified for the 1972 Olympics, yet was mysteriously not picked to go.

The three men remained close friends, Carlos and Smith were pallbearers at Norman’s funeral in 2006.

(I hate to be the one making the Black rights protest about the white guy. He paid dearly for his role, and I also hate to think he’s remembered as the third wheel on that podium.)

I don't think it's making it about the white guy to honor his actions decades later. Or even a few years later.

He may not have faced oppression for his race or gender, but he did put himself aside for a greater cause and that is commendable. Sounds like a pretty good role model, in fact.

I've seen the photo without knowing that much about it, so thank you for sharing.

Fun fact: the Nazi salute was copied from the American pledge of allegiance (Roman) salute, which went out of fashion in response to Nazi use.

It’s almost as if the USA has been a fun blueprint for a starting point for fascists world wide for some time. Thankfully it has (so far) not reached any of their terrible end games!
