which implies it's not against the rules currently? I have definitely seen some on Lemmy but maybe it was on gonewild not AskLemmy?

    That post is specifically discussing rules changes to the ask Lemmynsfw community, not the instance as a whole. This community is designed only to showcase users questions to the greater Lemmy, not for personals ads. There are plenty of spaces on Lemmy that allow personals(ignoring the fact that it's a terrible medium for it), just not this specific community.
