[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 112 points 9 months ago (3 children) Margaret Thatcher being your hero tells me everything I need to know about you. I feel bad for the Japanese populace. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] TheBlackLounge@lemmy.zip 35 points 9 months ago* (2 children) She platformed on this, they willingly voted for it. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 17 points 9 months ago Good to know people are just as stupid the world over. permalink fedilink source parent [–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 0 points 9 months ago The populace didn't vote for her specifically. The women in charge we end up with : (nb : I'm not saying women are incapable of power, just that assuming women would be great leaders is a stupid idea. There are examples of great/not horrid female leaders like Jacinda Ardern, but thatcher, this woman, Kirchner, theresa may, the lettuce woman are all terrible) permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 12 points 9 months ago (2 children) Look, I'm not the biggest fan of Angela Merkel, but the dude before her and the two after were all worse. And she's a whole world better than Thatcher. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago (1 child) I purposely avoided putting her name in as she is a complex ruler who is largely average and debatable the same way most male leaders are and her decisions can be interpreted in multiple ways by multiple people... unlike May, thatcher or kitchner. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 4 points 9 months ago* (1 child) I didn't want to come off pissed. I'm sorry if it was perceived like that. Merkel could have done a lot of things a lot better, or could have started others she didn't even touch. But at least I didn't have the feeling she constantly and deliberately chose the worst option for the people. I guess people could interpret the decisions of Thatcher in multiple ways as well. Those people would be wrong though. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago I didn’t want to come off pissed. I’m sorry if it was perceived like that You did not come across that way, just that you assumed I put in Merkel when I deliberately avoided putting her in, so in terms of tone and whatnot, there's no problems. I guess people could interpret the decisions of Thatcher in multiple ways as well. Those people would be wrong though. With thatcher it's a bit more straightforward for some of the things she did and it's wide ranging impacts. I don't think Merkel decimated entire regions of germany the way thatcher did to britain, even though she made some people very rich. Merkel may have made choices that had undesired impacts, but thatcher was really something else. permalink fedilink source parent [–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago (1 child) Merkel was around for a long time, must have done something right. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 9 months ago I remember Germany being one of the most prosperous EU nations during her tenure. Voters often assume women will be more left or more compassionate, regardless of their actual opinions or policies. Because of this, to appeal to the median voter, female politicians often need to go further right, either intentionally or unintentionally, to compensate. Alternatively, this stereotype might allow them to get away with more of this behavior if that is their real personality/ideology. permalink fedilink source parent [–] gon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 9 months ago My thoughts exactly. permalink fedilink source parent
