I know that "females" is seen as icky when describing women or girls, but since not all women were born female and not all born females are women, would that make addressing them as such transphobic?

If you're talking in a scientific context about AFAB people, it's probably fine. Though keep in mind that also includes trans men as well. If you're just trying to refer specifically to cis women, say cis women.

The bigger concern is sounding like an incel for saying "females" in regular conversation.
