If you shoot an empty wand at a mimic, it will show an hp-bar above its head without "waking it up"

There's even a visual queue, besides the animation, to look out for!

The chest on the right is the mimic. The latch is raised on the mimic and in the normal lower position for the chest.

I discovered this during a mimic tooth run, where as far as i know there are no visual differences between normal and mimic chests

Mimics also lack the strong shadow of the chest. This makes them look flatter, with less depth. Mimic tooth makes mimics show a normal buckle so you can’t rely on that anymore but it doesn’t fix their shadow.
