Yeah doctors can't give your medical history to the press, regardless of the circumstances. Like even the cops have to get a subpoena in order to access a patient's medical records. And even then, they may struggle getting information they want. In psychiatric care, for example, unless you tell your therapist you plan on hurting yourself or literally killing someone else, they can't even disclose their relationship to you. That's enough to lose their license. You essentially have with your psychiatrist the same protections you have with your lawyer.

At the very least, the doctor who leaked the medical records should be stripped of their position and possibly charged with malpractice.
