A very detailed article about the whole Meta (Instagram/Threads) vs. Fediverse discussions. It's a long read, but well-worth it if you're interested in the subject.

What a lot of these places started out as, grew a userbase with, and then sold out when they got mainstream and popular.

Quality engagement can't be found at those places once they become corporate!
