It merely provides the vegetables. You still have to get your grains (and therefore the majority of your calories) from somewhere else. geteilt von: https://lemmy.ca/post/22193783 Author: /u/well-made_innocence Link Shared on Reddit Original Reddit Comments

There is not enough room for grains. permalink fedilink source parent [–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de [S] 14 points 2 years ago (2 children) Growing enough grain to feed yourself takes 400 - 1000 m² depending on soil fertility. So you can't do that in your backyard. It's also dramatically more efficient to harvest grains with big machinery, so it's wise to put it together with your neighbours and form something like a cooperative. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] MareOfNights@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 years ago (1 child) That's like a 32m x 32m field, not as big as I was expecting. But yes, larger fields are more efficient. I wonder if there is some reasonable setup for farming grains with aquaponics. (Rice doesn't count XD) permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de [S] 4 points 2 years ago Well yeah rice, xD apart from that i'm not aware of anything. Also beware, that grains need direct solar irradiation (they need to collect lots of energy, much more than vegetables), so stacking them on top of each other is not viable. permalink fedilink source parent
