reddit 196 went the trans circlejerk route but they were still funny

lemmy 196 went the trans circlejerk route but I don't find them as funny

    especially those submarine memes

a post I saw"The Titanic submersible passengers have died. It's OK to celebrate. 🥳"

"The week has been made. The five people who went missing in the submersible exploring the Titanic wreckage ate shit, according to the authorities."

this is a real post, see for yourself

You don't get to be a billionaire without exploiting a fuckton of people, there is no such thing as a good or ethical billionaire. The only sad part about that submarine story is that it couldn't hold more billionaires.

I mean, a billionaire dying after dismissing numerous safety concerns, disregarding regulations, all for bragging rights is pretty ironic considering that normally innocent people are the ones who gets harmed. I hope all the other billionaires take note of how we feel about them.

And the 19 year old who hadn't exploited anyone but died all the same?

The memes are in general not “funny” per se, but the situation sure is. Are you implying otherwise?

Like, funny "haha"? Or weird funny?

People died; it's about as comical as migrants drowning in the Mediterranean.

Billionaires died of hubris, oh no. The kid I might feel bad about but the rest not so much. Drowning migrants are desperate poor people looking for a better future, I don't see how those are in any way comparable except for happening at sea

I see this popping up a lot.

"Billionaire died", "rich guy croaked" "wealthy person perished"

It's as if some people are so caught up in a class war they forget that we're all flesh and bone. At 4km below the surface it doesn't really matter how you got there or what's in your wallet, you're totally helpless.

I'm not a very empathetic person in general, so I find it odd that i feel the need to explain this.

Especially if you're like Mr. CEO who was so full of himself that he thought basic security practices were for losers. Yes, I get it, people died, but you can't tell me I have to feel bad about rich people dying doing what they loved: being money-grabbing self-centered idiots who will skimp on something like life saving measures to save a bit of money

There you go again, qualifying their personhood.

I'm not saying anyone should feel bad for them, but like I've said, the merciless mocking that's been going on this week is in poor taste.

These people all have families, presumably have friends. Now their loved ones have to try to grieve in a sea of media attention and playground insults. It's indecent.

I'm not qualifying their personhood, I'm just not wringing my hands over how it's so so sad that they died

Nah, at least to me it isn't a matter of wealth at all. Every single inch of this submersible looked like pure sketch, there were so many massive red flags and anyone with an ounce of sense would have been right to veer a hundred miles away from.

It's hard to feel sympathetic for the fools that paid to be on the damn thing when it was smelling of death before it hit the water.

If you put it that way, let's crowdfund a fleet of these things. Billionaires can't resist a handout.

People died because of their hubristic and needlessly extravagant hobby: visiting the wreck of a vessel that famously killed people because of hubris and needless extravagance. Sure I'm not laughing out loud or celebrating their death, but you must admit there's at least a wry irony here.

People frequently die climbing Everest, but we don't pillary them for ever having tried it.

What you do in your own home is your business, but posting memes publicly for anyone (including the family of the deceased) to see is in poor taste

You mean lemmigrad or whatever? The ones people on lemmy keep referring to as tankies

I left reddit to get away from all this political rivalry stuff and I guess it's unescapable. Sigh...

Tankie is not equal to fascist, tankie is equal to communist, but yeah one of the biggest techniques of christian fundamentalist fascism it's to make tankies look as fascists.

I'm just saying that's what I've seen them described as. I don't have an opinion on any of that and I've seen red fascist and tankie thrown around and honestly seeing people arguing about definitions and political ideology is making me want to stick to my subs. But that's on me to avoid stuff I feel is toxic to my mental wellbeing lol. I'm seeing myself fall into my old reddit habits and I don't like it.

My original comment it's pure sarcasm. There is no way for a trans fascist only instance cos true fascists hate trans people. So basically it's an ideological contradiction my original statement.
