I must admit - I am thoroughly shocked that not only are they doing it, but they're actually going all the way to get their main game of Fortnite with upgraded Easy Anti-Cheat running on Linux too. Although, they're going all-in with AI, and even mentioned the new app has been "vibe coded".

I mean it's Linux gaming support even if it is Epic but that AI comment, yeah....

using existing Linux features including signed kernel, signed kernel modules, and secure boot with attestation

Hell no, fuck that. Last time I tried secure boot it broke everything. I take my freedom to run my system the way I want and if you don't like that then I'll keep my money and spend it on other games instead.

Who the fuck is going to play Fortnite on Linux?

Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher

    Is it april fools day?

With pretty much all software being written by LLMs that should be everybody's default assumption in 2026.

It's worth including if it's not vibbed, because that's the minority now.

TL;DR: they called it vibe coding not using AI as a tool, or AI assisted coding. It's a red flag to me and the app is probably crap.

It's one thing to use AI to code and completely another to "vibe code".

Vibe coding as a general thing, means giving the ai a task, having it do it with minimum intervention, and if it "looks" good, shipping it as is.

i.e. vibe coding is terrible. It produces dogshit.

Using AI to write some form using a CMS's API that you've done a thousand times and it's just a PITA to find how to define the fields, is fine, for example. But that isn't vibe coding per-se.

If they used AI as a tool they wouldn't call it vibe coding, but they probably used it as a mule that did everything and just carried them along, produced crap, after which they say LGTM and ship it to us posing as if they made something even remotely close to linux users' standards.

2 weeks later: "Epic Games is filing for bankruptcy after blowing all its cash on vibe coding and a marketing campaign for its new launcher"

Lol they are going hard on social media comparing how they are faster than Steam, but the new launcher they are boasting about doesn't even have feature parity with their own old launcher never mind feature parity with Steam.

Even though I don't use Epic Games/play games with anticheat, I'm pretty excited about this. If Fortnite finds success with an anticheat on Linux, there's a good chance that other major players will follow suit. The #1 reason to not switch to Linux I have seen from gamers is that they can't play multiplayer games that require anticheat, and a ton of them use Fortnite as an example.

No, that's a fucking problem. Proliferation of intrusive anticheat on any OS is a bad thing.

Then let them suffer with Microslop until they get some self respect

What a sad way to think. I personally want everyone on Linux and everything to have Linux support. That doesn't mean I want kernel-modifying anticheat (That's not even what is being used for Fortnite compatibility, and would never get accepted into the kernel to begin with,) but it does mean that some of the things I deem less desirable also get Linux support. But I see that as a necessary step for the next stage in Linux desktop's growth. Why must we ask people to give up the things they enjoy to get out from under an evil, mismanaged company's thumb?

The problem is that some these companies are toxic as fuck and will do everything they can to enshittify Linux if given time.

Kernel-level access isn't a thing on Linux for now, but Epic will do everything they can to try to make it possible.

Why must we ask people to give up the things they enjoy to get out from under an evil, mismanaged company's thumb?

The reason is because the "thing they enjoy" is owned and operated by another evil, mismanaged company. They can drop 2+ evil companies

Eh, that's not really a concern to me. There isn't a way to enshittify open source. Even if they could somehow convince the maintainers of the base kernel to shoehorn in some kernel-level garbage (which is insanely unlikely, it goes against everything Linux stands for), there will always be a fork of the kernel that ignores problematic changes but keeps the actual improvements.

As for the dropping 2 evil companies, I agree, but one is just a game. The game itself is predatory and problematic, but on Linux, outside of the actual game itself, it's harmless. One program that is screwing you over is much better than your entire operating system.
