๐ŸŒŸ Community Highlights ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ“ธ Meta Post Image: Community Aid Network ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

This month's meta image is another Story Seed Library banger, 'Community Aid Network' created by Daniele Turturici (CC BY-SA 4.0).

"A united, compassionate, and resilient community comes together in times of crisis. A coordinated network of volunteers provides rescue efforts, medical assistance, and warm meals to people displaced by an environmental disaster. Everyone can contribute, even those without specialized training. While it is wise not to rely entirely on technology, it can also play a crucial role in managing critical situations by streamlining both physical operations and organizational efforts, helping communities respond more effectively when every moment counts. But thatโ€™s not all. Emotional support is just as important. When people feel safe, protected, and supported by their community, they are more willing to give back and help others in return, creating a positive cycle that benefits everyone."

As a fun bonus, there's also a coloring book version of the image! :)

Image used: A united, compassionate, and resilient community comes together in times of crisis. A coordinated network of volunteers provides rescue efforts, medical assistance, and warm meals to people displaced by an environmental disaster. Everyone can contribute, even those without specialized training. The foreground is within a large tent. An injured person is being helped on the left by a volunteer medic, in the center is a man showing a child how to fix a radio, to the right 3 engineers are inspecting a holographic map of areas of interest as a cute drone flies overhead. In the background is a community food kitchen, with injured lining up for a hot meal. Behind them, the ruins of a city that is devistated by a natural disaster, likely from climate change.

I'm really loving the art for these posts. And this one has a coloring page?! You guys kill me with awesomeness!

That pic reminds me of a post I made a while back hoping to brainstorm ways to nudge modern healthcare toward the solarpunk mentality. What we have now, especially in the big-hospital setting like where I work, seems so hopelessly incompatible with solarpunk, which still kinda drives me nuts.

Revisiting that thread, it looks like it got more attention than I realized, but still not much I can act on or forward along to others with some actual authority (of which, I don't really have squat).

Anywho, relinking it here just incase someone more creative than me stumbles across it - always looking for new improvements!

I think there is little hope reforming huge hospitals from within, but have you looked into mobile clinics and such? I think there are examples of them being operated by local NGOs to help disadvantaged rural communities or maybe seasonal migrant labour?

I mostly know concepts like that from emergency response though. Like they are relatively common in Ukraine. Most are small and only do basic care and referrals, but you can find larger examples like the mobile field hospital the Red Cross is operating in Gaza.

Artists of slrpnk! Iโ€™m in need of an icon for !ancienthistory@slrpnk.net if anyone feels moved to make one:)

  • Hey, this is the art I borrowed my PFP from! Love how it captures the concept of mutual aid and the ways that communities overcome disaster and misfortune through cooperation, far more common than successfully making it through on "rugged individualism."

    Consider banning AI images

EDIT: Apparently the artist is (or was) real as evidences by this image posted about 8 years ago. Why they've adopted such a style and never put any linework videos on their YT the world may never know.

Do you believe this month's meta image is AI generated (on close inspection, it does not appear to have any telltale signs that it is, it looks hand drawn to me). Or are you referring to a different incident?

Dang I thought it was AI too, it has that vibe at first glance. But you're right, if you look at the details it is pretty clearly not.

The artist also made an uncolored version with only the line-art visible, which I don't think an AI would be able to reliably produce and then color in with such accuracy.

Since you've brought the topic up, who is the artist?

Daniele Turturici. There is a section in this very community discussion post dedicated to it, with a link to its source from the Story Seed Library (which does not allow AI generated content of any kind, and even suggests artists poison their artwork to fight back against AI slop).

They published 3 of these between Jan 8 and Feb 5, 6 pieces total in the last two years. Their insta has more images but I can't view the details on any of them without a Meta/Facebook account. Their reddit account posted those 3 images I mentioned.

They have an artstation page but it doesn't include any dates, the image metadata says the oldest post was modified Oct 2026. I'm noticing a profound lack of consistent style. They always draw the characters different from one post to the next. Robots.txt for the site specifically says NoAI.

They have a YouTube but they've never shown any linework only coloring.

Might be an artist, probably AI, might be an artist who adopted AI. It just feels really slop to me, idk how you can loot at this style and think it's got no signs.

It doesn't have any of the typical GenAI inconsistencies. I would even go so far as suspecting the artist intentionally drew things into the image that AI typically messes up like cabling that continues out of view and comes back into the image, and people holding hands in certain poses etc.

All the hands and feet i can see have the correct number of fingers and toes respectively.

The words are actual words, you can even make out menu on the sign behind the engineer.

Edit: even these dudes in the background appear to be proportionally sound.

I can see dates for all their images on their art station at the bottom right (on desktop). As an example, this image of theirs was posted 8 years ago, and this one 6 years ago, far before AI was capable of making such things.

Looking at the 6 images available on their Story Seed Library profile, they all seem to have a very consistent art style to me, with very similar faces, expressions, color use, same robots, and consistent line weights. The oldest submission there is from August of last year.

The signs of slop I usually see in highly detailed pieces of art like those would be inconsistent perspective, odd lines that suddenly end, messed up hands, fine details that don't make sense or form anything recognizable, etc. I don't see any of that in this artist's work.

It's not impossible that an artist could use AI to create small individual pieces of an artwork and assemble them together into a final image, but I feel like it'd be very difficult to maintain a consist art style across the whole image using that method, and I feel like an artist would have to make so many manual corrections using that method, it might just be easier to draw the whole thing manually instead.

I haven't kept up to to date of what AI art generators can make, perhaps the latest ones could generate something this complex and artful while maintaining consistency, but I don't think an AI would've been able to do it without it being more noticeable last year, IMHO.

they all seem to have a very consistent art style

You seem to be arguing against my statement about their artstation page: https://danieleturturici.artstation.com/

Specifically between Ox the Tech Guy and OLTRE images it was literally a completely different style every time.

If anything the line consistency is a flag for me, real humans generally adjust brush size as they work pretty organically.
