Sorry if it's already been shared, I found this website doing a good job listing alternatives to big tech services.

I'm not affiliated, they also have a bluesky account (it's how I found them). https://bsky.app/profile/euroalternative.eu

I really wish weโ€™d stop referring to non-Big Tech solutions as โ€œalternativesโ€ because labeling something as such automatically places them as second-rate, substandard compared to the big guys. Language and how we talk about things can change the narrative.

But yes, thatโ€™s a great resource. But if you also wanna know which tools are people are switching from, their motivations / tipping points, and where, how, etc., then check out the visualizations at switchdigest.eu

Thanks for sharing nonetheless! I'm going to have my family - and myself - try out MevaSearch. :)

Also, I had pCloud before for a few years, until I switched to Internxt for some reason. I cannot for the life of me remember why I switched... Any ideas? xD

  • Ah, probably the lifetime deal! I wasn't using Linux back then. I just recently discovered that I can use their (Internxt) AppImage and rsync to "circumvent" all my RAM being consumed when downloading or uploading via browser. However, Internxt's transfer cap is pretty insane... When they told me that I can't backup a 200GB tar archive, I was so angry and disappointed. Since then, I have started think that maybe self hosting is the only viable option, but then that would be within the premises of my apartment, which would defeat the purpose of off site backups. Please excise my rambling. Anyway, pCloud now seems to have a โ‚ฌ99 per year plan that has 4TB transfer cap per month, which sounds kind of good?

Nice find, hadn't seen this one. One gap I noticed: the task management category is all team and project tools. Nothing for a plain personal to-do list or day planner, which is what most people leaving Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do actually need.

Disclosure: I build one, OmmiQ (ommiq.com), a day planner made and hosted in Germany. Free, no subscription, no tracking. I've just submitted it there. If anyone knows other European personal to-do apps, post them too.
