Detroit hasn't had a gm for two full months lmao. Edvinsson is an RFA and said that no one has even contacted him about his contract since Yzerman was fired (ahem promoted to senior advisor, sorry), so he's going to training camp without even having a contract with the team yet.

A couple days ago I opened the red wings subreddit out of morbid curiosity and the top post was about Adam Fantilli not being signed should we target him and all the comments were like "I really wish we had a gm so we could consider options like this". (IMO there's no world in which the cost needed to acquire him would be worth it to Detroit, but it's still objectively funny.)

I honestly wonder if the reason it's taking so long is that all the serious candidates are telling ownership that the current incarnation of the red wings cannot be saved and ownership is shooting down anyone who wants to begin their tenure with a Seider trade that nets an enormous haul. Part of the reason they're in this mess in the first place is because they refused to trade a young fan favorite with enormous value who was entering his prime when the team was a tire fire.

The team is a disgrace. I don't think you're too far off on why there isn't a gm. No real candidate wants to start with a season they have no control over and a captain that wants out, making a rebuild mandatory.

Good news, they now have an interim GM! Waiting two months to name a stopgap is a pretty outside-the-box approach here.

It's the guy that already was the interim GM, so the interviews went really great for everyone else.

Well he was nominally already the interim, but given that last week Edvinsson said he literally had not been talked to at all about his contract in the past two months and is now paying his own insurance to attend training camp, it's pretty clear he hadn't been permitted to perform essential gm duties. Functionally the wings are just now appointing Horcoff as interim starting today.
