I'm building a bunch of dotfiles with a meta package to replace this shit if people really want it.

It's an alternative, for people who find it cool but don't want to support tech bros. Built by hand, in the EU, with local LLMs instead of cloud based slopcoin generators.

How should I call my "''distro""?

Regolith Desktop has some similiar ideas and is based on Sway.

Its native to Ubuntu— support on Arch could be improved.

thanks, maybe I can use that. Thought about using Polonium for now, but I'm sure I can integrate multiple options. After all, it'll be just a bunch of dotfiles and (meta-)packages.

Omarchy may have started out as dotfiles and scripts, but now it's a formal collection of Arch packages. I'm not sure if all their packages have been upstreamed to Arch, but I expect not:

    https://github.com/omacom/omarchy-pkgs/tree/master/pkgbuilds

Regolith may also seem like it would also be a "collection of dotfiles" to customize Sway and other things, but it also has a number of packages that they've developed or patched as well.

For example, I think both Omarchy and Regolith developed their own launchers. Regolith created Ilia, and I think Omarchy created something to replace Walker.

One thing both projects have been in common is they prioritized consistent theming across a range of applications. In both cases, it required some customizations to various projects to get them to read centralized theme settings or otherwise respond to theming changes.

Pinging @yxc999@lemmy.ml, maybe we can collaborate and have pu-239 with Polonium as WM as the base?

Hell yeah, thank you for reaching out, I just DM'd you.

For the 0.0.1 version I will just have a minimal but slightly configured KDE Plasma, but in 0.0.2 I do plan to make a wider range of desktop environments and/or window managers available to be selected. To have some pre-configured options like "regular old KDE" or "non-facist tiling WM" along with some just vanilla out-of-the-box options like GNOME, Cinnamon, COSMIC and so on would be perfect.

0.0.1 is supposed to be the kind-of unpolished proof-of-concept release with just one "forced" path both visually and under the hood. 0.0.2 is supposed to be a visual and QOL release where your help would tie in perfectly with more DE/WM selections, prettier UI (especially the calamares is looking as basic as a matcha-latte). 0.0.3 will be the same for the technical side with more choices for the components instead of forcing my current stack with systemd-boot, systemd-bless-boot, ostree and so on as I realize that not everyone wants to have that much systemd based stuff (me included, but this was the most reliable way to implement it for 0.0.1).

CachyOS does already provide a wide range of options, but their development has kinda come to a standstill the last few months. Some of my PRs have been sitting there for two months when I decided to delete my GitHub and move to Codeberg permanently. To breathe some fresh air into the available options will be a fantastic move, I'm looking forward to your reply!

Edit: I don't wanna talk bad about CachyOS in the slightest, they have done outstanding work, but you do notice them not keeping up as much as they did before, just saying.
