Well, I doubt the benefits, too, but I still take calcium, vitamin C, a multi-vitamin, and pop other pills when I can afford 'em, because this is America, damn it. The food we're offered is generally processed to hell, but I don't have the time, budget, or inclination to make an organic lentil stew every night. So like most folks, I take vitamins and supplements, cuz I figgur there's a slightly higher chance it'll help than it'll hurt.

Of course we don't love supplements. Our commercial food sources are so devoid of micronutrients, and our diets are so full of processed foods, that we don't get what we nutritionally need from our food. What else can we to do?
When your work day is effectively 12 hours, and no one can be "stay-at-home" for cleaning and maintenance, processed foods become more and more necessary just to have enough time for the necessities of life. Like, the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy necessities.
We live in a plutocratic hellscape and are just trying to survive
