I went to Knoxville, TN for Thanksgiving today and brought my 4s with me and it's getting 2 bars average. Is it supposed to still get service? Before when I made calls it would fail, but now it calls American Roaming. It's a Verizon phone with an old SIM card, but it still gets a few bars when I take the SIM card out. Anyone know why? Verizon's 3g networks shut down a while ago.

How do you know

That’s average

The "1x" indicates you are connecting to an even older CDMA network... pre-3G.

Would it be 2g or in between 2g and 3g?

No, 1x was (barely) considered 3G when it launched. The 2G version of CDMA only supported Circuit Switched data, which was basically the cellular version of dialup (as in you literally had to dial up an ISP to be connected, and it was tethering-only to a laptop).

It looks like US Cellular covers Knoxville. They still have CDMA 3G operating, and will be shutting it down January 2024. Very likely your phone is connecting to them because it’s the only network it can find.

I just checked the coverage map and I'm going back home today and where I live only 4g is supported

Good for you.

Thats because its roaming on US Cellular... which still has an active CDMA network. And if US Cellular follows through what they stated that will also be gone by next year.

Pretty much every phone after 2009/2010 uses the same digital protocol. So yes, it should get call service until the standard changes again. It kind of has half way through 4G. High definition calls on iPhone use data. But they still rely on digital phone for the most part.

I use a 4S on the side and I’ve never had trouble with it regarding service.

Its weird to me that most carriers in the us have shut down their 3g networks because 3g still works great in australia
