That's some beautiful art, altho I'm not sure I'm ever going to overcome my basic flag confusion:

(but not you, Wales and Turkmenistan, we're all good!)

If you cannot tell the welsh flag from all the others…

Isn't Basque part of france instead of spain?

Edit: looks like a small part is in france and most in spain, the more you know...

It’s the flag of Pahlavist Iran, essentially the Shah’s flag. FIFA only allows flags of member nations, and a ban of this flag in particular was held up in court.

Is this collateral damage from trying to ban the rainbow flag? Why does it matter so much that these things have to be banned in the first place?

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

No, the Islamic Republic of Iran specifically petitioned FIFA to ensure this flag would not be permitted in the stadiums as this flag represents the regime that the Islamic Republic deposed. Iran has faced multiple rounds of serious protests even before the US initiated war and the son of the Shah is a popular figure that some protesters rally around as an alternative the existing government. Essentially the Iranian leadership sees this as a threat to their governance.

FIFA’s solution is a blanket ban on all “political” flags, which I find kind of silly because all national flags are political symbols. There have definitely been petitions against LGBTQ+ flags in parallel to this situation though.

Not gonna lie, it's a pretty dope flag

isn't this flag just showing support for the Shah instead of the Ayatollahs?

[-] chellomere@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

No, it in general is used by Iranians opposing the current regime, regardless of whether they are pro-shah or not.

[-] bier@feddit.nl 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah not every Iranian that is against the current régime wants the Shah back, they also don't have a great track record.

It's true that not all of them want that, but a significant portion does want the Shah back.
