I mean, unless you're explicitly invited for dinner.

An entire meal? Pshhht. If you show up unannounced, you're lucky if you get more than a glass of (excellent quality) tap water. If I like you, I might put the kettle on for some instant coffee.

If you show up unannounced, you're lucky if I open the door.

[-] Lumidaub@feddit.org 5 points 5 days ago

True, my reply was of course assuming you have very good reason to invade my home and you come bearing gifts.

[-] ahornsirup@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

Instant coffee? So if you like people you punish them more than if you don't?

[-] Lumidaub@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

It's the only coffee I have. You want coffee, you take the instant. Be grateful I don't use the microwave to heat it.

[-] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

at least it's coffee.

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 13 points 5 days ago

Not sure about that for Ireland. A cup of tea sure. But gtfo if you think you're staying for food.

[-] Flamekebab@piefed.social 6 points 5 days ago

If you were coming 'round for a meal, sure, but otherwise I'd expect you to already have plans for what you'll be eating that day.

[-] FlordaMan@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

The best I can do is a kringverjaardag where you get some snacks…

[-] iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 days ago

Kopje thee of kopje koffie. Een koekje erbij.

[-] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

bitterballen?

[-] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 3 points 5 days ago

I mean, it depends on where you draw the line for what a meal is.

In Sweden you're all but guaranteed to be served a minimum of coffee and some form of sweet pastry/cookie (fika).

[-] roserose56@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Sweden along with Netherlands and the rest are "get the fuck out" lol.
How come Italy is usually?

[-] freeman@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

Its probably split between North and South averaging usually.

[-] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 3 points 5 days ago

I don't think I ever served anyone a meal. If you announce your visit, I'll bake a cake. But other than that, nah.

[-] pleb_maximus@piefed.zip 2 points 5 days ago

I did once for my sister and my brother in law.
But they were on a trip and asked well before of they could stop by for some lunch.

And the cooking part was just some boiled potatoes on my end.

[-] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 1 points 4 days ago

Yeah sure, if you call in advance and ask "hey could we have some food", then it's no problem, but I would never cook something for guests if they're not explicitly asking for it.

[-] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

Useless data, how long are these visits? the length of stay is going to be the main determiner of whether there's food made, am its not like your getting a full meal if you're just stopping by for a quick less than an hour visit even in the 'almost always' countries

[-] Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

Idk my fam’s impulse is to bust out the snacks and drinks for the shortest of visits

[-] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That's another issue with it, it says 'served a meal', what constitutes a meal for the purpose of these stats? does it have to be a full sit-down cooked meal? or do snacks count? tea & biscuits?
