I got a haircut recently and was doing just this. "One dog is a mix of ABC, the other XYZ. You said you have a cat? What kind?"

"Oh...just a regular one. Not a fancy one."

I get asked about my dogs a lot because of their rarity outside of Finland, people want to know the breed.

"They're Finnish Lapphunds."

Always sounds fancy, but if you take away the geography bit, you're just left with 'hund', or in English, 'a dog'.

No traits, no job, no specific breeding to the name, just 'a dog, found in these parts.'

Hell, my oldest one's dad lives in a junkyard in the woods in Finland. Lovely nature. Excellent outdoor companion in the snow 🥰

Is the Lapp- bit geographical? Or is it equivalent to "lap dog" in English?

The most northern region of both Finland and Sweden is called Lappland (named after the sami people that has lived there since forever, and that were once called "Lapps").

The birthplace of Santa, according to some folklore.

Aye. The Swedish Lapphund is a version too but obviously very much the same dog. Lapphunds have been the comoanion of the Sami for a very long time.

Man, I got asked that question a short time after we got our cat and I didn't know what to say. "Uhh, a black one!?"

"This is our English springer spaniel. He has papers!" Compared to almost all the cats that were "He showed up and screamed at me until I said guess we got another cat"

(Some of my grandmother's cats had papers but all my cats are mutts)

Cats are often categorized by their coloring rather than breed. Jack looks to be a tuxedo cat.

[-] chickynuggets@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

the ones categorized by color are all just mixed breed. Calico, tabby, tuxedo etc. The ones categorized by breed are actual individual breeds (Maine Coon, Scottish Fold, Persian etc)

People conveniently ignoring a whole ass breed of bald cats acting like it's just cat pattern baldness

[-] Nanook@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

Nah it’s a dog, then people ask what breed. Then it’s part this and part that. Cat people straight up give you a lecture how cats domesticated themselves twice. And how we’re all worshipping Isis or something idk. I’m not a cat person.

I got a siberian husky, a chipoo, and a long-haired calico that has claimed me as their person.
