The Treasury has run this program for years, and people have donated $67.3 million since 1996

I read this too... This post should be removed for bullshit. It may be the original articles headline... but the headline is complete and utter garbage.

I mean it's true that Venmo was not an option to donate money there prior to Trump's presidency. He probably has nothing to do with it, but who knows. Could have been Musks idea to update payment methods, or the last admin..

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

If Musk's idea, wouldn't it have been PayPal?

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

PayPal was added as well according to the article.

It's just not enough money to make it something I think musk would have cared about. 2.9% per domestic paypal transaction...

I imagine it's only about 30k a year they'd make off those little donations

So people have paid off 0.00019% of the debt.. nice

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 weeks ago

I feel like it's the opposite of nice, well meaning people getting grifted by the state itself.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

I should've added a sarcasm tag in there. You're right though, I was trying to imply with such a crazy low percentage it's not even a drop in the bucket and probably would be considered just a straight up grift.

Isn't that what DOGE was supposed to do by cutting waste?

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 weeks ago

Lol. Do you do stand-up?

So with new tax cuts for billionaires causing a growing national debt this is like giving money to billionaires. I can't believe there are people dumb enough to do this ...

[-] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago

was my thought. help pay down the national debt so we have more head room to lower taxes for the wealthy some more.

[-] [email protected] 20 points 3 weeks ago

Shitty misleading headline, which implies a shitty misleading news organization. Reading it, I assumed the Orange Dipshit is so desperate to reduce the national debt that the OD is now begging on the streets for a dollar.

Looking into it, donating to pay off national debt has been a thing for fucking decades. It's a pretty useless program that spent more over the decades dealing with it than the peasly voluntary taxation it's pulled in.

Nonetheless, the OD expanding the program to include Venmo and then a news org shouting "Trump is really asking people to Vennmo to pay off the national debt" implying how they do is misleading and gross.

This is the most oniony not the onion I've ever seen. This thing reeks of pungent onions.

I knew that this existed for a long time. I didn't know that you can use Venmo or PayPal now. It seems that wasn't possible in the past. I also knew that money you use for this purpose is probably tax deductible, though only in the same way that a gift to a charity would be: https://dontmesswithtaxes.typepad.com/dont_mess_with_taxes/2010/04/voluntary-payments-to-the-ease-the-public-debt.html

It seems to be tax deductible, yeah.

pay money to the state in order to pay less money to the state

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago
