This should never have to happen in any modern society for any reason.

I live in Canada where we have healthcare, but people do things like this here as well, just for different reasons. Some homeless people will do it so that they don't have to spend winters on the street, which sucks but I fully understand. Jail is a whole lot nicer than freezing to death in -30c (-22f) weather.

One of my family members who lives in deep snow country told me that in the winters some homeless people commit minor petty crimes like breaking a window or something in order to get sent to jail and get some food and shelter from the harsh weather conditions.
