It's a shitty system but it's the system. The only way to stop it is to stop tipping as a whole. Also note that you have to get at least minimum wage even if your tips don't get you there. Depending on where you are, they have to still fully pay your hourly wage. Additionally taking any percentage of your tips is illegal in some places as well.
