It would cost me about 5k a year if this tax hike was enacted.

Yes, I am a high income earner.

No, I don't want to pay more in taxes.

Sure enough, the NDP bankrupted the province... I voted for them, but am not impressed.

I'm sorry, 5k a year? When the legislation is actually taxing people that make 200k+ a year at an additional $192/year.

At $250,000 the increase would be about $1,192, and at $1.5 million about $36,192.

Your claim of 5k additional taxes, then you're claiming you make about 440k/annual. So current take home is 20,700/month. After new legislation take home would be 20,300/month.

That type of salary puts you in the top 0.5% of income tax filers in Canada. You, allegedly, make more than 99.5% of tax filing Canadians and you don't want to pay an extra $400/month in tax?

I'm doubting the veracity of what you're saying.

My friend, it's not like it bring true even helps your argument. You're not the victim. You're the rich person who doesn't want to marginally pay their fair share.

If you're worried about that 400/month then you should skip your daily Starbucks matcha latte and avocado toast. Budgeting really helps.

New anonymous accounts spouting conservative rhetoric while saying they voted NDP in the past (all during elections) does not exactly instill trust in what you say.

I don't expect you to agree with me. I'm merely explaining that this campaign promise of the NDPs has affected my vote. And it's so funny... my conservative friends call me a liberal shill. The (what appears to so far be somewhat of an intolerant) cesspool here claims I spout conservative rhetoric. In reality, I'm a left leaning centrist who thinks he pays enough in taxes. I know, go figure.

We live in a democracy (a flawed one, unfortunately). But it's your prerogative to vote as you deem suitable and I apologize if I've come off harshly - you can see that many people have strong feelings due to how much everyone is currently struggling.

If you feel that a nominal tax increase is your single issue line in the sand, then you do you. Just worth keeping in mind how taxes serve the entire community and that the BC NDP have reduced the balance massively (the opposite of bankrupting). Also worth keeping in mind the many examples of people advocating for less tax, like just south of us, and the mentality/society that follows versus Europe (with way higher taxes and progressive brackets) and their mentality/society.

I've lived in many provinces, BC being one of them, and I've noted that people in BC take the social and governmental services for granted; where other provinces just give you the finger for those same things.

Hopefully you won't make the relatively small extra taxation the thing that keeps you from voting NDP. There are so many other issues we could try to find common ground on. But if it does, well, that's your absolute right in a democracy.

Imagine living and working in a system that allows you to make so mich more money than you need. And then to be upset at paying less than 1% of it in extra taxes to maintain or improve that system.

‘Give me all of the benefits and non of the responsibility or Ill throw a hissyfit.’  is what it sounds like.

Without those taxes those costs start coming out of pocket to private companies like insurance or health providers or road tolls. Easily eating up the savings of not paying taxes, and then some.

You can afford it, but others can’t. Don’t be a dick. Thats un-Canadian.

The obscene wealth inequality cannot be fixed by haircuts on the somewhat higher earners. It needs taxing the obscene wealth difference, not the income streams. Billionaires' income streams are not that spectacular; they live off loans backed by their wealth. Does not even count as income. And us plebs are at each other's throats at a few 10k yearly difference in our incomes. Congratulations to the billies, they played us.

What are you talking about? I pay a ridiculous amount of taxes. I believe last year I sent the CRA nearly $150k.
Accusations of not paying my fair share are contrarian nonsense. And for how much I get back, I certainly feel like I pay my share of the responsibility. Quite frankly, I think I get a bit ripped off. Is it any wonder I don't want to pay ANOTHER 5k because Eby can't keep it in his pants?

You need to stop looking at it in terms of absolute dollars paid. And look at it terms of how much you have left after paying for a comfortable level of living, and taxes.

Most people don’t cross the threshold of comfortable, and if they do, they have virtually nothing left for retirement or savings.

A thousand dollars to you isn’t the same as a thousand dollars to someone else.

That’s where a lot of people will claim you aren’t paying your fair share.

Also, blaming the state of the province on one part or one man is really missing a lot of historical context.

Decades of avoiding taxes has led the atrophy in our health care system. Then covid happened. Globally. We weathered it quite well because of the NDP party. It still took its toll. A lof of our aging staff in the health care sector either retired early or burned out due to the undue stress. I think a lot of people are blind to how over stressed the system was during that time.

It’s a delusional pipe dream to think we can fix any of that without taxes on those who can afford it.

Yes, I am a high income earner.

Oh! Then we couldn't possibly care about your opinions. You're lucky we're just trying to tax you, lol.

Uhh no its absolutely a promise based on historical analysis. Either pay your fair share or the peasents will chop your head off, lmao.

Not a big fan of history I take it?

Instead of income, wealth should be taxed. Someone may be a relatively high income earner and still not economically safe because they are not coming from generational wealth.
