The sentence right after makes it pretty obvious why too:
Although caesarean sections were performed in Roman times, no classical source records a mother surviving such a delivery, while Caesar's mother lived for years after his birth.
There was no proper understanding (or possibility) of sterile surgery back then, so a c-section was just a death sentence.
