Yeah. In the middle of a two-plus hour video about cruise lines, there’s a clip — just a few seconds long — of a friend who joined Ellis on one of the trips singing karaoke. And that caused the entire video to come down while the “dispute” was adjudicated.

And, as Ellis notes, YouTube by default sides with the copyright holder, because the nature of copyright law is that it very, very, very strongly encourages intermediaries to side with the copyright claimant, even if that claim is obvious bullshit and clearly fair use (as is the case here). YouTube’s ContentID system is basically built with that in mind. Even as YouTube spent years fighting back against copyright maximalism and winning the massive DMCA case Viacom filed against it, in the end, to keep the big copyright holders happy, ContentID is really designed to strongly favor copyright claimants, even when their claims are bullshit.

The culprit in this case? Apparently our old friends at Warner/Chappell, which, let’s just say, have a history of this sort of absolute bullshit.

...

On Bluesky, Ellis points out that this wasn’t an automated takedown.

Publish it to the fediverse. Good luck with their stupid take-downs.

I love how shit on the fediverse bounces around like crazy from server to server all over the world with messages being duplicated by different communities to make the protocol work.

Here is one of the vanishing few places in the digital realm beyond video games that see messy interweaving and interconnection between people internationally towards more and more wholistic communities as a form of strength against fascism rather than weakness.

In one sense the Fediverse is far easier to obliterate than other online communities given how little money and traditional resources the Fediverse has to defend itself vs. how globally exposed it is, but in another it would be the most massive headache in the world to try to quietly and carefully censor voices on the Fediverse given the constant beehive activity interacting across disparate communities located in different countries with different laws and different motivations and key actors.

I am very passionate about correcting the misinformation and disinformation around this, I wholeheartedly believe the more vulnerable we are in sharing ourselves through digital identities in larger and more interconnected communities the less power authoritarian forces have over us.

It may seem counterintuitive, but you need only to look to history for how ineffective everybody receding from public spaces pre-emptively in response to fears of fascism was or look more closely at the opposing solutions to the Fediverse that attempt to run away from the fragmentation and censorship of Corporate Social Media and the old internet by fragmenting pre-emptively into disconnected and uncommunicative smaller atomized commmunities to see why the Fediverse is absolutely necessary for resistance.

Does anyone actively use peertube? What instance should I use and who should I follow or subscribe to?

If that's not easy to answer than I can see why it's not an option for many.

Blender uses Peertube as a major platform for videos about Blender and made in Blender. Blender is a perfect example of actually committing to using Peertube and showing it can in general work.

    https://video.blender.org/

As far as instances I recommend, Spectra.Video looks good I have been thinking of making an account there

    https://spectra.video/signup

gnu linux seems like a decent Peertube instance too!

    https://gnulinux.tube/signup

Here is a good gaming focused Peertube instance

    https://tube.fediverse.games/

I think people way overthink the difficult of bringing new people into Peertube and the Fediverse. What is sticky are the people, artists and organizations that have people who trust them and seek out what they make, not the platforms. What is sticky about the Fediverse is that people are compelling and interesting to interact with here.

If creators decide to come here themselves, their audience in the end isn't going to care that much where they go to get the videos especially if it doesn't require an account sign up to access.

It will take time, but the inspiring thing is it is already completely possible to do!

its been at least 12 months since I visited PT but back then instance federation was voluntary so it was a chore to find stuff I might be interested in because of that, you needed to be on a dozen instances, it was like if Lemmy didn't federate, making it particularly tedious fir end users.

I used Newpipe as my PT app
