Because back then it isn't a keyword smack across industry, not intrusive, without threatening every employees that they might left out, and no chip shortage. It's a branding, you can't blame people for not knowing.

Maybe, but i guess that has also to do with the fact, that a lot of companies don't seem to have any idea what the legitimate use case could be, so they throw it everywhere and see where it sticks. Which kinda reminds me of the company i've worked for several years ago, which was basically just "let's throw GPS data onto a map and see what happens" for 20 years, and was struggling when logistics companies wanted a bit more than just a damn map. They had to rework the entire interface.

Only a matter of time until all the "chatbox with addons" providers go down the drain...
