[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago (6 children) What's the advantage over traditional delivery? permalink fedilink source hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago* The only benefit I could think of isn't going to be in the areas that they want to deploy this service. Like, I could see this being advantageous in lower populated areas that don't really have DoorDash drivers. But yeah, if you're in a populated area, I don't really get why I would want this over. Just having a traditional driver that arrives. I guess if the system told me that it was going to be delivered by drone, so therefore I knew not to tip ahead of time? idk permalink fedilink source parent [–] BartyDeCanter@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (4 children) Avoiding traffic and using an electric vehicle instead of a ICE one. In Bay Area traffic an electric drone can do a delivery in five minutes that would take a car thirty. And the Zipline style high hover + tethered descent drone is quieter than a car. I’m not sure if these are using that style or the low hover type like Amazon had been using, which are much louder. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] PapstJL4U@lemmy.world 1 point 6 days ago Avoid traffic until they become traffic, telefon lines and such included. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Trilogy3452@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (2 children) Quieter than a car? I thought these make loud buzzing sounds permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] BartyDeCanter@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 child) It heavily depends on how close you are and their hover system and how much work has been spent to make them quiet. You probably heard about the Amazon ones, which are loud and hover low to the ground. There are other ones, such as the ones Zipline makes, which are quieter to begin with and hover very high, using a powered descend module on a cable. Those are basically silent from ground level. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] Trilogy3452@lemmy.world 1 point 1 week ago TIL permalink fedilink source parent
