Ah the land of the free...

Big mistake to not collect real money from this. Not only he will need it as the cops will certainly harass him and his family non-stop after this, but bankrupting these departments is the only real avenue left for Americans

    The departments won’t go bankrupt. The local government will. And it’ll start by cutting services for the poorest to attempt to cover the bill

    Well I know Americans will just take it until their last breath... but putting pressure is the only way this moves somewhere... the police clearly does not care about the law so without any repercussions, as is the case of this lawsuit that cost them $76, they will correct fuck all

    The police don’t bear the brunt of repercussions currently. Any financial penalty is paid by the local government (or their liability insurance) and ultimately hurts the taxpayers.

    Yes, they need to feel pressure and see repercussions but that needs to come from systematic change through community involvement.

    Raising awareness and getting public attention to these issues helps drive that, but it’s a slow process and takes time.

    Show me ANY progress attained this way in the last 15 years

    This is TEXAS... the "dOn'T tHrEad oN mE" State and police abuse is so clearly accepted that they have these stint operations running while blabbing about them publicly and you are asking for raising awareness? No wonder the USA is circling the drain

    As I already stated, and as you conveniently cropped out of your quote, systematic change will do more to fix the problems and raising awareness and getting public attention to these issues helps drive that.

    No wonder the USA is circling the drain

    Look in the mirror, friend. Attitudes like yours, focused more on short term punishment rather than long term systematic and systemic change, keep us right where we are.

    Well, if the town pays the departments and then the town goes bankrupt, it seems like the town can't pay the departments and thus they're still bankrupt. It also has the effect of pissing off everybody wondering where the fuck their money went, only to find out that it was pissed away by their police department.

    Also, I don't know much about your town, but I know my town doesn't have shit for social services or social service spending like the majority of small towns in the United States.
